The glossy‚ dark green leaves are partially responsible for Wax Leaf Privet's being a Southern and coastal customary plant for generations․ The evergreen leaves are as lustrous as any in any kind of light and give the plant most of its "waxy" look in the summer heat and humidity of the South․ In the late spring till early summer the shrub is covered with clusters of small white flowers‚ and so fragrant is the air around such a bush that the scent wafts into the yard on a summer evening․ It gives hard service all year round: it is thick and green all winter‚ and comes into flower just when the rest of the garden is just starting to wake up․
